Well Doug has his surgery on Tuesday May 17th. We got to St. Anthony's Hospital at 8:30 in the morning and around 9:00m they took us back to his room. The nurse he had was very nice. She told us what exactly was going to happen and that this was his room and we could do whatever we wanted with it. That I could go get food and drink and come back with it, watch TV, sleep, etc.
From there it was getting him all prep for surgery. About 10 or so people came into his room and asked him the same question. What are you here for? around 10:30 when he was scheduled to have the surgery the nurse came in and gave him his nerve block.
Then at 10:45 the anesthesiologist came in and told him what was going to happen and some of the words out of his mouth scared the crap out of me. He told Doug from the way he was laying on his belly he could potentially wake up blind. Wait did you say blind I asked? he said yes we protect your eyes but from the way you are laying you can go blind. I pretty much freaked out the rest of the day till he was out of surgery.
After everyone came in, his doctor came in and talked to him about his foot again and drew on it so she was ready in the surgery area. While she was drawing she explained to him again that she was just removing the bone and leaving all his tore ligaments alone and see how they heal or feel after his heel is healed. If the ligaments and one tendon still hurt so bad he cant stand it, this will be a step by step process and we will do surgery again. I'm thinking are you freaking kidding me, while all the steps you are already in there do it all while you are in there. I guessed she sensed that I was feeling this was because she said something to me. I told her I understand, but I really didn't. She says she wouldn't do this to her own family members, because if its not needed then why do it. But I'm thinking hes not going to know if it was done or not so just do it so he wont have to go through this all over again. After all this I'm thinking he should have gotten a second opinion and I am not caring for her. But as I was always told, doctor knows best.
After they took him back I headed out to the waiting area where Dougs parents were and updated them. Then we all headed to the cafeteria, I was starving. While down there I told his parents everything I was told while we was in his room. Doug's dad flipped out and bitched about everything I said, so I learned you cant tell his dad anything. After I was done eating I took my desert and headed back to the room, because the surgery nurse said she would update me every hour. When I got back there was a message on his bored that said surgery started at 11:30 and will be back at 12:30 with an update, so in the mean time I watched the Price is right, Greys Anatomy, and the Deal or No deal, then I guess I fell asleep cause I was awoken by a knock on the door with an update around 1.
Around 1:30 his doctor came in and asked me if he was ever exposed to metal? No I dont think so, not that I am aware of. So she shows me some pictures from the surgery. In the pictures she shows me 3 metal fragments that were in his foot near the heel were she removed the chipped bone. She did everything by scope so she was not for sure it was metal, but she thinks that is what it was. But we will never know as she just scrapped it all away when she scrapped the bone out.
After she left I went out and updated his parents then about 20 mins later the surgery nurse came back and said he was just waking up and he was on his way back. As soon as he got back to his room the first thing I asked him, was can he see? LOL and of course he messed with me and said NO! Ha Ha Not funny buddy! From here it was only maybe an hour or so and they were preparing to ship him home.
A new nurse comes in and un hooks him from everything and tells him to get dressed while she gets him a soda. His throat hurt from the tube they had down his throat. After he was dressed we wheeled him out and headed home.
The first night was rough. Around 1 am his nerve block wore off and even though he took his vicodin like he was instructed to do in case the block did were off, the vicodin was not working and he was in so much pain he couldnt stand it. And I know when he complains as much as he did he is hurting, cause he never complains. He is one tough cookie! So anyway of course all night he was up, which kept me up but I didnt care because I know he would have done the same for me and hopefully soon he will get to do it when he gets up with the baby.
The next morning I of course had to go to work, with him not working and his STD not kicking in yet we only have my income and I have no vacation left. So his mom came over when I left. At this point he was still in so much pain that as soon as his doctors office was to open he was calling her and getting some stronger pain meds, she prescribed him and anti inflamatory to reduce the swelling, which helped alot. He no longer really has any pain.
This Tursday he has a follow up appoint ment and then its just 4 to 6 weeks of recovery. And then hopefully not the second surgery that the doctor talked about.
